Building relationships with dogs - the art of growing trust
What does relationship building mean?
Relationship building is the process of creating a deeper connection between humans and dogs - based on trust, understanding, security and genuine communication. It is not about obedience, but about the emotional basis on which co-operation, everyday life and development can succeed.
We - Lui & Paulina - don't see relationship building as a training goal, but as an attitude. A dog that feels safe because it trusts its human shows more co-operation, more relaxation and more joie de vivre - without any pressure.
Why is relationship building so important?
Many problems in everyday life - from leash pulling to reactivity - are not so much parenting mistakes as relationship breakdowns. Where there is a lack of security, stress, insecurity or controlling behaviour arise. A stable relationship framework gives the dog orientation - and the human the opportunity to lead confidently without being authoritarian.
Relationship building means:
Closeness without constriction
Leadership without dominating
Free space, without indifference
Consistency, without harshness
What is part of a healthy human-dog relationship?
Reliability: People act predictably and fairly
Clarity: Rules and boundaries are clear - without contradictions
Empathy: The dog is perceived as an individual
Shared experiences: playing, laughing, training, sharing everyday life
Body language communication: communication without words
Our approach at Vitomalia
Relationship is the basis of everything. We don't work "on the dog", but with the team. Relationship building is not a module for us - it is the common thread running through every training programme. Regardless of whether it's a fear dog, young dog or trauma dog - there is no sustainable progress without relationship work.
Our focal points:
Everyday rituals that provide security
Building voluntariness & thinking along
Promote orientation instead of enforcing control
Learning to understand what the dog is saying "between the lines"
We see relationships not as a destination, but as a path. And every journey begins with a first genuine contact.
Our conclusion
Relationship building is not a technique - it's an attitude. If you are prepared to engage with your dog, you will find a partner - not just an animal that follows.
A dog that trusts stays. Not because he has to. But because he wants to. And that is the strongest bond there can be.
